Every two years Adelaide plays host for the finish of the World Solar Challenge a solar powered vehicle race which covers 3100 kilometres, from Darwin to Adelaide.
The solar car was invented by Hans Tholstrup, a Danish born Australian citizen, who has done more adventurous things than most people can think of. In 1982 Hans and Larry Perkins drove the Quiet Achiever across Australia from west to east. This adventure inspired Hans to dream and invent the solar car race, Hans conducted the inaugural World Solar Challenge in 1987 and a number of subsequent races. The South Australian government eventually purchased the rights to conduct the race.
This race has gone on to inspire others, other people to build solar cars, other people to organize races. The race has become the most prestigious event of its kind in the world, past winners have included GM (America) Biel Engineering School (Switzerland) and Honda (Japan)

This event has also allowed many South Australian and other Australian schools to compete with world leading schools, universities and motoring industry giants at an international level.

For the 2007 race City Plastics sponsored Continuum, the team from Michigan University USA
City Plastics supplied clear acrylic canopy parts and wheel covers, that helped Continuum become one of the fastest solar cars in the world. Unfortunately the car was involved in an accident during the first morning of the race, the accident delayed Continuum by a full day, however the next 4 days was spent passing 90 percent of the field.

In 2009 we continued our support of Michigan University and their new car Infinium.
Throughout the four and a bit days of the race Infinium swapped places with Tokai University of Japan and Nuon Solar from The Netherlands for first, second and third. Eventually we came in in third place. Bring on 2011.................

In the past City Plastics have proudly supported Annesley College by supplying blow moulded acrylic canopy domes for there solar powered car 'EOS'

Annesley are still competing in the Greenfleet experimental vehicle class.

Every year South Australia also plays host to an International event.
The International Pedal Prix. (a bike race for human powered vehicles)
City Plastics have provided parts to West Lakes Shore School during the 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 races.
